DESCRIPTION This study-unit guides students on how to plan a fashion collection from start to finish. It encourages students to identify ideas from various inspirational sources to create a mood board from a specific design theme combined with current fashion trends. A well-coordinated, fashion collection, on paper, is created from this mood board, using colour and fabric design. This collection will be presented in a portfolio, including flat drawings and describing any sewing procedures.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at helping the students to create a fashion collection by guiding them to identify ideas from various sources of inspiration. Students will be assisted to conduct in-depth research on specific themes that will eventually lead them to select one to present for their fashion design portfolio. The unit will thus provide an opportunity for students to practise developing a portfolio which shows evidence of research, innovation and techniques, in addition to individuality and creativity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Create ideas from almost any inspirational source, whether it is from the home or exploring fine arts, or discovering a foreign culture;
2. Draw the human figure and clothing in detail, to represent what is seen in a bold and individual way;
3. Identify potential customers and draw a collection within the constraints of the season and budget;
4. Examine the retail fashion market, taking notes on interesting garments, colour schemes and retail price;
5. Plan a fashion collection effectively and support the illustrations with flat working drawings and represent your ideas as three dimensional garments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Describe a collection in detail, from the inspirational source and the final product, explaining the sewing skills needed, colour palette and textile design;
2. Define the target market sector a collection is aimed for and present appropriate marketing ideas and promotional budgets;
3. Express any problems regarding budget and manufacturing constraints;
4. Discuss any possible issues regarding the range and time management problems;
5. Review the seasonal trends and forecasting;
6. Select workable designs only and clinically filter out ideas which would not work;
7. Assess and critically analyse own work and others; in a constructive manner;
8. Propose a working budget plan;
9. Compare preliminary collection by researching, looking at other design collections;
10. Carry out investigations to fulfil fashion design brief requirements.
