DESCRIPTION This study-unit offers an expose of fashions of Western Civilization from ancient cultures to the present day. The introductory focus of the unit will be on the social, historic and aesthetic influences on fashion design. Other factors such as economic and technological changes will also be explored. The main focus will be on different styles created by famous fashion designers which will be analysed in detail. A discussion on the European, American and Asian fashion designers is also carried out. This background will be used to lead the students to critically evaluate present fashion trends.

The latter part of this study-unit will focus on the history of Maltese costume in order to contribute towards a greater awareness of Maltese national identity. It will also discuss the various characteristics that contribute to the uniqueness of the Maltese costume.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at familiarising students with the history of fashion in the Western world and the development of styles and designs through the eras. It will also enable the students to acquire an awareness and understanding of the Maltese costume history.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Analyse, through various presentations and readings, the basic fashion styles of Western Civilization, from ancient cultures to the present day;
- Discuss, in groups, the various factors influencing past and present fashion trends;
- Discuss, in groups, the social, historic and aesthetic influence on current fashion trend;
- Outline the characteristics of Maltese costume throughout history;
- Discuss, through a thorough reading of the literature available, the factors that have influenced the Maltese costume over the ages.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Present orally a critical analysis of costume as seen in a film set within a particular civilization or time period;
- Present the findings from the critical analysis of the chosen film in an assignment;
- Investigate through visits, the influence of traditional costumes on today’s fashion;
- Conduct a presentation on some Maltese folk garments, highlighting aesthetics, function and potential for revival.
