DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the role of Home Economists as caring professionals assisting in the wellbeing of individuals at different stages of the lifecycle and in different living circumstances. It offers students insights on the various needs of these individuals and their households and the work of different state and non-stage agencies and organisations in offering services and incentives to enhance quality of life and reduce risks for personal and family wellbeing. Guidance on basic principles for working with vulnerable individuals and households will also be presented.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to extend the students’ understanding of the role of Home Economists as caring professionals who work to promote the wellbeing of individuals at different stages of the lifecycle, of different ability and of different life circumstances. With a special focus on vulnerable individuals and families, it helps sensitise students to the various needs of these households and describes the work of state and non-stage agencies and organisations in offering services and incentives to enhance their quality of life. The study-unit also outlines basic principles for working effectively and ethically with vulnerable individuals and families.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the general vision of Home Economists as caring professionals;
- Describe various special lifestages and circumstances where Home Economist may play a role in improving quality of life for vulnerable individuals and families;
- Discuss the role of different state and non-stage agencies and organisations offering services and incentives to enhance quality of life and reduce risks for personal and family wellbeing;
- Identify specific assistance and skills which Home Economists could offer and share with to empower vulnerable individuals and families in collaboration with other professionals.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Source the latest information about services, benefits, incentives and projects related to promoting wellbeing of individuals and families in special or vulnerable circumstances;
- Critically evaluate different strategies used to enhance the quality of life of individuals and families for accessibility, motivational value and sustainability;
- Plan basic lifeskills programmes for particular special and/or vulnerable individuals and groups;
- Practise communicating guidance and recommendations to vulnerable individuals and families in an effective and ethical manner.
