DESCRIPTION This study-unit looks at curriculum planning for a whole course in relation to current HE syllabuses and specific students’ needs. It will help students interpret the HE programme/course, plan for the year in order to cover the required syllabus, plan for a term in order to balance the learning experiences, as well as plan individual lessons, including practical lessons based on appropriate differentiated objectives. Logistics of daily lesson planning and learning experiences will also be addressed, as well as basic evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of all lessons.

Importance is given to cognitive, affective and psycho-motor objectives and active learning strategies. Overall this study-unit will focus on planning student-centred learning experiences, where the teacher is more a facilitator and co-constructor of knowledge rather than one who disseminates knowledge only.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to:

- Enable students to become familiar with curriculum planning in an inclusive setting;
- Expose the Home Economics syllabus to the students and show how this can be utilised to disseminate the content and the skills;
- Introduce the students to Lesson App - the Finnish Lesson Scoop template;
- Help students define, develop and plan courses and learning experiences which benefit school students;
- Define and develop aims and objectives for HE courses;
- Show how to plan schemes of work and other material for the whole year;
- Show how to plan for daily lessons and learning experiences, which meet different students' needs;
- Show how to planning for practical lessons and demonstrations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Prepare plans or year plans for Home Economics courses;
- Distinguish between the different needs of students and learn how these needs could be catered for;
- Distinguish clearly between aims and objectives;
- Identify objectives for different topics.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Prepare detailed schemes of work following the plans or year plans prepared;
- Differentiate between and write clear objectives suitable for high ability, medium ability and low ability students, thus be able to cater for mixed ability groups;
- Produce detailed lesson plans which could be used in Home Economics;
- Suggest tools which could be used for assessing learning in Home Economics;
- Plan for a demonstration and a practical lesson;
- Learn how to make use of the Finnish Lesson App https://lessonapp.fi/malta
