DESCRIPTION Students are introduced to the skills and competencies required by the profession of a Physical Educator. Students will explore a variety of teaching styles across a multi-dimensional educational experience which brings across the need to develop interpersonal relationships and organisational skills. Students engage with competencies such as classroom management, communication, planning for instruction, execution and evaluation as well as teacher creativity and adaptability.

Study-unit Aims:

The educational purpose of the study-unit is to engage students in understanding, learning, reflecting upon and applying skills which are essential for the physical educator's profession. The study-unit aims at focusing on these competencies and looking at ways how these can be used effectively.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify his/her preferred teaching styles through practice;
- Acknowledge the importance of communication in physical education, including the use of the voice, demonstrations, giving instructions, feedback, and questioning;
- Differentiate between the various teaching styles by evaluating the appropriateness of each style and its effective use in varied contexts;
- Acknowledge the meaningful approach of multi-dimensional teaching and learning through the practice and evaluation of this medium;
- Relate between pedagogical decisions, communication patterns and relationship building to classroom behaviour and class control through practice and observation;
- Use organisational skills and creativity to advance student engagement through observation, reflective practice and hands on teaching experiences.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Plan for instruction and evaluation through lesson planning;
- Include creativity and modes of communicating in instruction to help accentuate student engagement, motivation and help build relationships;
- Communicate effectively with the pupils;
- Demonstrate and give clear instructions;
- Use questioning to develop higher-order thinking skills;
- Give the right feedback to enhance learning;
- Plan for instruction in relation to the multi-dimensionality of education;
- Apply teaching styles which are appropriate for the context in use.
