DESCRIPTION This study-unit equips students with the theoretical knowledge and technical skills to comprehensively understand leadership, teamwork, human factors and communication in relation to patient safety and clinical risk management. It focuses on how leaders and managers develop patient safety culture within healthcare organizations, as well as developing well-functioning teams that adopt patient safety and clinical risk management principles.

Using case studies, students will learn about how effective leaders and well-functioning teams address patient safety and clinical risk management situations.

Students are made aware of the importance of human factors and communication in relation to patient safety issues, medical errors and adverse events.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to equip students to understand how clinical leaders of well-functioning teams:

- Enable a culture of safety;
- Address and prioritise safety, and
- Create the organisational context in which safe care can be reliably delivered.

In addition, the unit also aims to equip students to gain knowledge of the evidence of the impact of well-functioning teams, human factors and reliable communication as impacting on patient safety and clinical risk management.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Examine health care organisational theories, emphasizing leadership knowledge and skills team building and teamworking and communication skills;
- Critique HRM and HRD theories and practices, focusing on leadership qualities, teams, human factors and communication; and
- Assess and differentiate factors that relate to the manner in which humans interact with operating systems and which may impact on patient safety and clinical risk management within healthcare organizations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Acquire skills in leadership, teamwork, application of human factors and communication;
- Apply HRM and HRD practices in health care settings to improve patient safety and avoid clinical risk;
- Explain how to manage and lead operating systems in health care settings efficiently and effectively;
- Critically analyse a number of patient safety scandals from the perspectives of leadership, teamwork, identification of human factors and communication in a 2 hour analysis task.
