| DESCRIPTION | This is a seminar class, in which a range of specific issues from twentieth century Maltese history are investigated. Subjects, which will be selected in consultation with students, may include questions such as specific constitutional milestones, Church-State- relations, landmarks in the Anglo-Maltese relationship, Malta at war, Malta’s place in a changing world, aspects of economic, social or cultural development, and any other suitable historical topic which students may wish to investigate. Once assigned their topic, students are expected to (a) meet with the lecturer for a briefing and discussion session, and (b) research in depth the topic chosen using primary and secondary sources with a view to presenting their work in class for a general discussion, moderated by the lecturer. Study-unit Aims: • To guide students in conducting hands-on research on texts and sources of late modern Maltese history; • To develop in students the ability to learn in a group through discussion of their research findings; • To develop students’ ability to deliver and communicate their work publicly. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Discuss critically historical topics, including controversial ones; • understand the research process as an added value to published knowledge; • Connect the knowledge acquired with comparable contemporary situations. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • Conduct basic historical research, combining the use of primary and secondary sources; • Deal with potentially controversial or delicate issues in a detached and impartial manner; • Translate acquired knowledge into a viva-voce presentation capable of stimulating discussion; • Speak out in front of a class in a clear, confident and communicative way; • Write up a research paper; • Use the correct form of presenting footnotes, bibliography, and other writing conventions detailed in the departmental style-sheet.
