| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on the relationship between the Maltese Islands, Spain, and Portugal through material culture, art, and social perspectives in the early modern age. It will start with a brief introduction of the significance of Malta as the southernmost outpost of the Empire when Charles V granted the islands as a fief (feudo) to the Order of Saint John in 1530. The political and diplomatic relations in connection to the role of Spanish and Portuguese Grand Masters and knights will be explored through the lens of material culture, commercial exchanges, artistic connections, and the influences of the Convent of the Order in its peripheral properties and members in Spain and Portugal. This module will also include a brief glance at pre-1530 contacts, and conclude with an overview of the modern cultural landscape resulting from Iberian-Maltese relations.
