TITLE Synoptic Study-Unit (European and International History)

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT History

DESCRIPTION In the light of the modular structure of the BA and BA (Hons) programmes of study, the synoptic examination is designed to prepare and measure students’ ability to link and combine together, often with a thematic approach, knowledge acquired in individual segments, with the object of assessing students’ overall level of maturity and understanding at the end of the degree course. To assist students in preparing for the synoptic examinations, the History Department organises a series of seminars based on typical essay questions of a synoptic nature. During each seminar the question set is discussed and analyzed with a view to collaboratively producing possible model answers. Each seminar is conducted by two or more members of the History Department.

Aims:

• To cement together historical knowledge acquired through individual and detached study-units throughout the undergraduate course;
• To reinforce the principle that student overall assessment should take into special account the quality and maturity attained at the point of exit.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Connect historical events and detect trends occurring over time;
• Recall historical knowledge with reference to specific unseen questions.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Organize, analyze and synthesise extensive and diverse knowledge gained in distinct study-units through different learning methods throughout the course;
• Apply historical knowledge gained throughout the course to the understanding of a wide range of local and international issues, including ones of contemporary relevance.
