DESCRIPTION This study-unit intends to give students build on the skilled acquired during the first two years of the course. The students will be placed in an inclusive school setting for a hands on practical placement throughout the year. During this session the student is expected to show proficiency in supporting the student or/and students under their care and provide a rich inclusive learning experience.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to give students experience in supporting learners in an inclusive school setting. It also aims to help students with the help of their tutors, to link their practice to a theoretical framework, to be able to reflect on their practice and to process and reflect upon skills acquired.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Within a context of a school/class situation, develop a theoretical and practical understanding of major issues that educators are facing today;
b. Engage with other student LSEs to discuss how LSEs handle curricular and pedagogical issues with reference to learning theories;
c. Identify ways of handling disability and diversity issues after addressing them with their mentors and other school personnel;
d. Explain and report on the various professional requirements which affect a LSE's life in schools;
e. Draw a list of the requirements expected of an LSE after carrying out observation sessions in schools;
f. Analyse and report on the way schools handle issues of inclusion, diversity and multiculturalism through discussions and presentations;
g. Demonstrate and evaluate the principles of shared governance, solidarity and participation through engagement in a community context (e.g. NGO, creche, local council);
h. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their own particular facilitating strategies and learning processes through video recordings and discussions with university lecturers, mentors and other student LSEs;
i. Discuss and debates the relevance and impact of school policies, national documents and practices with other students, school mentors and university lecturers.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a. Design a learning programme for learners with a statement of needs;
b. Implement an IEP to the child under their care;
c. Document interventions and subsequent behaviour of the student under their care;
d. Process and reflect upon skills observed and acquired;
e. Apply the new baggage of knowledge, skills and attitudes in an inclusive school setting;
f. Keep a good record of work;
g. Collaborate with the class teacher and other professionals and present a solid programme of support to the child or children that are entrusted to him/her.
