DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of lecturer-directed independent research and reporting by students from the Faculty of Science who choose Computing Science (CS) as their primary area of study.

The unit is intended to assess the student's mastery of the major research-related skills, including: (i) intellectual engagement: the ability of the student to discover, absorb, master and reflect upon theoretical knowledge, accepted practice and methodologies relating to the field in question; (ii) communication: the ability to successfully present the work undertaken in written form.

Based on their research interests, each student will be assigned a lecturer as an advisor, who will assign a number of relevant papers in an area of research. The student will be expected independently to: (i) read these papers; (ii) identify other relevant related papers and study their content; (iii) summarize the underlying background required to understand the area; (iv) evaluate and compare the results reported in the different papers; (v) write a scientific report in an appropriate style with the outcome of their study. At each stage, the student will be interacting with their advisor to ensure that they are on the right track and to surmount any problems they may encounter.

Study-unit Aims:

- To research a new area, subject to regular supervision.
- To critically evaluate and compare research results.
- To selectively explore a research topic.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand research carried out in a specific area starting off from a number of chosen papers.
- Summarize significant relevant literature.
- Evaluate and explain how different approaches and techniques studied are related and compare together.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Investigate existing research in a specific area.
- Critically review the most significant relevant literature.
- Evaluate and compare different scientific approaches and results.
- Write a scientific report summarizing results and techniques in a particular research area.
