| DESCRIPTION | IFS0427 will help students wishing to join the medical foundation programme to engage with the most frequently occurring medical terms in context. The main focus is to introduce the students to how medical terminology is constructed through the use of prefixes, word roots, and suffixes so they will be able to understand the more complex terminology of diagnoses, research texts, and generla medical communication. Study-Unit Aims: The study-unit aims to introduce a variety of academic text types to students with no-to-little prior experience of engaging with medical termionology as it is used in textbooks and professional communication. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the structure of medical terminology; - recognise prefixes, word roots, and suffixes and theior meaning. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Infer the meaning of complex terminology through the breakdown of its different parts; - Construct more complex terminology through the use of prefixes, word roots and suffixes.
