DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will serve as a basic introduction to cell biology for students undertaking the Certificate in Foundation Studies in Science (Chemistry). This study-unit aims to give the cellular background to students of Chemistry and Medical Biochemistry since this topic is the basis of the function of the cell. The cell is the translator unit between biochemical reactions and tissue and organs responses and thus medical disease and treatments. Study-unit Aims: The focus of this study-unit is the basic structure-function correlations of cell biology , how biochemistry and structure interact; and how cells (as modulated by biochemistry) can influence disease and treatment. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the functions of the main cell organelles; - Compare prokaryotic and eukaryotic cellular systems; - List the functions of cell membranes; - Describe the characteristics of different important cell structures responsible for housing and guiding the basic biochemical reactions of the cell; - Identify the main methods of cellular transport and discuss the differences amongst them; - Discuss the basic principles of genetic inheritance; - Explain principles of meiosis, mitosis and cell division. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the different important cell structures responsible for housing and guiding the basic biochemical reactions of the cell; - Identify the role of each cellular compartment; - Give examples of disorders related to dysregulation of specific cellular functions and structures. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: - Mescher Anthony. Junqueira’s Basic Histology: Text and Atlas. McGraw Hill. ISBN:978-1260026177 |
