DESCRIPTION The study of Health Promotion provides a wide view of all the determinants of health, encompassing prevention of ill health, promotion of healthier lifestyles, marketing of health concepts, legislation for health and population health.

This study-unit takes the wide holistic view of health promotion that could actually bring about changes for health.

The study-unit is based on discussion of real situations that explain Health Promotion theory and allows for experiential learning for the student.

The assignment gives space for research and development of an area of interest to the student.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to increase the students' understanding of Health Promotion within their own role as health professionals. It will give an insight into the key concepts and basic principles of Health Promotion, while introducing practical skills necessary for development, implementation and evaluation of Health Promotion initiatives. Health Promotion specialists will discuss how the theory addresses the practice of Health Promotion, using real life experiences.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- define the scope of health promotion;
- identify models of health promotion;
- identify the key features and values that shape health promotion practice;
- understand how health promotion differs from related concepts, such as disease prevention and population health;
- design a health promotion strategy within the context of various health professions;
- implement and critically evaluate a health promotion strategy within a setting.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- use leadership skills to facilitate empowerment and participation (including team work, negotiation, motivation, conflict resolution, decision-making, facilitation and problem-solving;
- plan and manage a Health Promotion initiative;
- work collaboratively with partners to influence public policies;
- communicate Health Promotion actions effectively using appropriate techniques and technologies for diverse audiences;
- understand social and cultural diversity.
