TITLE Basic Notions of Public International Law

DESCRIPTION The unit is designed to introduce the student to the main principles of Public International Law, thus exposing the student to the broad international legal framework. Topics of instruction include: the nature and sources of International Law, International Legal Personality, the relationship between international law and municipal law and principles of jurisdiction.

Study-Unit Aims:

1. The study-unit is intended to arm the student with an understanding of the core principles of international law.
2. The student will also be taught the link of international law to the Maltese legal system, in particular.
3. Similarly, the student will be instructed on the difference between national legal systems and the international legal system, and the respective subjects of each to understand the various roles, areas of operation and functions of the international legal system.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) identify and analyse the workings of international law;
(b) write upon the role of the State and the role of international law in the global order;
(c) critically appraise a selected area of international law.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) demonstrate a working knowledge of the foundations of international law;
(b) differentiate these principles from the core principles governing national legal systems.
