DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides an analysis of the general rules and principles of international law. It is designed to introduce the students to key concepts and doctrines, providing them with the knowledge to understand the specialised branches of international law regulating the prevention and suppression international crimes at sea. The study-unit covers topics such as the nature and origin of international law, subjects of international law and international legal personality, sources of international law (treaties, custom, and general principles), jurisdictional principles, immunities and extradition, use of force, and State responsibility. It will also examine the relevance of judicial decisions and publicists. Furthermore, the study-unit will deal with the implementation of international rules at the national level.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the general principles of international law which is necessary if the student is to understand the international regime regulating the prevention and suppression of crimes at sea.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Master the general principles of international law which are relevant to future studies of the regime regulating the prevention and suppression of international crime at sea;
- Analyse the dynamics of the rules regulating the subjects of international law, particularly States;
- Assess the methods by which international rules are enforced;
- Grasp the relationship between international law and municipal law.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the capacity to evaluate principles of international law and their importance in preventing and suppressing international crime at sea;
- Apply the learned knowledge to the subsequent study-units dealing with the prevention and suppression of international crime at sea.
