DESCRIPTION This study-unit presents a clarification and /or definition of key concepts in business ethics with particular emphasis on their application in monetary and financial services. It also provides an exposure of critical implications that come along with business ethics’ concepts. Consequently the study-unit seeks to unveil those criteria of justice not subject to whim, but rather to a sufficient measure of reason, logic and concept analysis. Special attention will be given to the Austrian School blueprint for ethical behavior in Money and Banking, as well as to the notions of Christian ethics in the workings of the national economy as illustrated by Catholic social teaching.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Equip participants with the critical skills required to evaluate, assess and appraise diverse areas of finance, banking and monetary policy from an ethical standpoint.
- Provide participants with a thorough overview of the major schools of thoughts’ contributions to the ongoing debate over business ethics and their application.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define, describe and apply all relevant terms and concepts relating to Ethical Values and recognise the distinctions drawn by different schools of thought interpretations of ethical concepts in finance.
- Integrate the theory of ethical problem-solving and decision-making, with the use of case study example and exercises for skills application with self-assessments to chart the students' understanding.
- Engage in informed critical reflection on the nature of professionalism and ethical challenges inherent in professionalism
- Define prominent normative ethics frameworks – consequentialist, deontological, virtue, and contractualism
- Identify types of ethical challenges and dilemmas confronting members of a range of professions (business, media, police, law, medicine, research)
- Bring to bear ethical analysis and reasoning in the light of normative ethics frameworks on a selection of ethical challenges and dilemmas across the chosen range of professions
- Relate ethical concepts and materials to ethical problems in specific professions and professionalism

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate the ability to provide sustainable answers to today’s issues in monetary and financial policy from an ethical standpoint.
- analyse and appraise current controversies in money, finance and banking through an ethical analytical contribution.
- formulate answers to current questions in business ethics based on the knowledge received through the study-unit’s academic content.
