DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide an introduction to environmental challenges in Malta, and explore the central role that the environment plays in economic and social development. It takes a broad view of what the environment means, introducing the interaction between public policy, the private sector and civil society in innovation linked to environmental issues.

The study-unit also examines how industry and businesses innovate to reduce the impact of their activities on the environment and discusses different ways of how environmental innovation can be integrated into routine operations and corporate strategy towards cleaner production.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To outline the main environmental pressures and challenges in Malta;
- To familiarise students with the main environmental policies in Malta and the EU, and their relevance to innovation;
- To outline the interaction between public policy, the private sector and civil society in innovation linked to environmental issues;
- To define different types of environmental innovations in a business and industry context;
- To evaluate the main elements of a green business model.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the main environmental challenges and policies in Malta;
- Explain the interaction between public policy, the private sector and civil society in innovation linked to environmental issues;
- Develop an understanding of the different types and levels of environmental innovations in industry;
- Explain the principal elements of a green business model;
- Discuss how innovation in the business model can result in greening.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the roles of public policy, the private sector and civil society in innovation linked to environmental issues;
- Evaluate different types of environmental innovations;
- Analyse how businesses and industry transition towards greener production and consumption.
