DESCRIPTION Innovation involves the creation of new knowledge, or intellectual property (IP), in the form of ideas, artistic works and inventions, whereas entrepreneurship involves the process of value-creation out of this new knowledge. This study-unit introduces the concept of IP and the value of knowledge, explains IP rights and the different options for IP protection, and covers different ways of creating value from intellectual property in practice.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to teach students the concepts behind innovation-driven entrepreneurship, namely:

- That new knowledge, or IP, has value;
- That intellectual property may be protected in various ways, so that its creator benefits from certain rights;
- That these IP rights can be used to create value, and may form the basis for an innovation-driven enterprise;
- That there different ways of creating value from IP.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the meaning of intellectual property;
- Distinguish between different methods for protecting IP, categorise the type of IP they apply to, and describe how each of these methods can be used in practice;
- Discuss IP ownership within different contexts.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse an innovation and determine possible ways of creating value from it;
- Recognise intellectual property and propose ways of protecting its value.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Students will be provided with reading materials in pdf format throughout the course of the study-unit. These shall include case studies from Harvard Business Review.
