DESCRIPTION This study-unit will provide an introduction to the use of foresight methodologies as alternative approaches to encouraging creativity and innovation. The key aims of this study unit are to encourage an enthusiasm for and better understanding of future trends and their impacts on society, everyday life, business and governance. It provides an overview of popular tools and approaches for exploring and managing various contexts of future change. Key aspects to be covered include:

- Definitions and distinctive features of foresight and related concepts;
- Focus on the range of methodologies and approaches available;
- Real life case studies covering sectoral and horizontal themes;
- Practical sessions.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to enable students to gain an understanding of basic concepts in foresight as well as practical know-how on how to run a foresight exercise. This will be achieved through a balance of theoretical and practical insights.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Identify the characteristics of foresight;
• Analyse the application of foresight approaches in different contexts and across different sectors.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Critically appraise different foresight tools and their application;
• Present and market the design of a foresight exercise effectively and concisely in a workshop.
