DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the role of leadership in the management of change and innovation. Organisations are becoming more complex and open entities that require constant development and fine-tuning to keep abreast with emerging market realities and remain ahead in their sector. This, in turn, requires leaders who are capable of managing change and innovation in order to maintain their organisation’s agility and competitiveness.

Indicative Content:

This study-unit will assess how leaders influence, manage and implement change and innovation. This will be achieved by making reference to relevant theoretical perspectives and management practices while encouraging critical reflection on different scenarios. The role of leadership is critically analysed in view of the various styles and methods that may be employed to enhance the management of change and innovation.

Study-unit Aims:

- To evaluate the relationship between leadership, the management of change and innovation in organizations.
- To critically appraise the different styles of leadership while assessing their relevance when practicing specific management practices.
- To appreciate the important dynamics that link leadership with the management of change and innovation.
- To challenge students to develop plausible solutions for improving leadership systems to enhance innovation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of effective leadership in business and other sectors in society.
- Assess leadership dynamics in view of organizational change and innovation.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and practice of leadership in different contexts.
- Demonstrate a sound knowledge of the role of leadership in fostering attitudes that encourage innovation.
- Compare the different facets and characteristics that are essential in planning and managing organisational change.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to generate plausible solutions to case-study scenarios involving leadership, the management of change and innovation.
