Study-Unit Description

CODE ISD1204

TITLE Geographic Information Systems and GeoDemographics

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Institute for Climate Change and Sustainable Development

DESCRIPTION The study unit provides students with basic knowledge and experience of Geodemographics. Students will learn about Geodemographics, the basic concepts, their historical origins and their applicability to public sector decision making. Examples in practical lab sessions will be from a social marketing perspective, whereby students will create their own health geodemographic classificiation and use it to provide a quantitative evidence base for a health intervention scenario.

Study-unit Aims

- to provide an understanding of the origins of Geodemographic Classifications
- to provide an understanding of the concepts of Geodemographic Classifications
- to provide an understanding of the methods and practices underpinning geodemographic classification development.
- apply Geodemographics in the field of health

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand what a geodemographic classification is and how they are developed
- apply a basic example in health geography

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Create their own customized geodemographic classification using SPSS
- Map the results and use the results to locate communities with greatest health risk
