DESCRIPTION This study-unit will look at legislative requirements and environmental impact assessment procedures.

It will include a review of environmental legislation relevant to renewable energy projects.

It will introduce students to environmental impact assessment of renewable energy technologies, including visual and landscape/seascape character of the projects,noise and vibration assessment, impacts on the natural environment (including the marine environment).
The study-unit will show students how to carry out a Life-Cycle Analysis.
The EIA procedure will be explained to students with reference to EIA Case Studies on RES projects.

The study-unit will also cover surveying and metereology (including interpretation of weather data and techniques for weather forecasting).

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study unit is to give the students the necessary understanding of what is required to ensure that renewable energy projects conform with legislation and environmental assessment procedures.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- quote and interpret the environmental legislation, including specific articles relevant to a given renewable energy project
- describe the process of carrying out an environmental impact assessment of a given renewable energy project
- discuss the components of environmental impact assessments, such as visual and landscape/seascape characteristics, noise and vibration, and impacts on the natural land and marine environment of a given renewable energy project
- assess the above-mentioned components of an environmental impact assessment for a given renewable energy project
- analyse a given EIA case study for a renewable energy project
- define the characteristics of a life cycle analysis for a given renewable energy project
- describe the process of surveying a given site for a renewable energy project
- describe the meteorological characteristics relevant to a given renewable energy project and the parameters used to measure such characteristics
- calculate the renewable energy available from a given set of weather data
- describe the techniques of weather forecasting for a given set of weather and geographical data
- interpret a given set of meteorological data

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- select the environmental legislation relevant to a given renewable energy project and to identify the constraints on the given project arising from this legislation.
- prepare an environmental impact assessment for a given renewable energy project
- construct a life cycle analysis for a given renewable energy project
- identify the meteorological characteristics relevant to a given renewable energy project
