DESCRIPTION “Introduzione al cinema” will focus on some of the key moments in the development of film as an art form from its inception to the present age. These moments may include among others the invention of cinema and its early pioneers, the silent era, the advent of sound, classical Hollywood Cinema, German Expressionism, Neorealism, and the French New Wave. In the process, the unit will also seek to introduce the student to a wide range of historical, aesthetic and theoretical considerations of cinema. Reference will be made to a series of films from different historical periods and different countries.

Study-unit Aims

To provide an overview of the key moments in the history of film from its inception to the present age;
To introduce students to the basic filmic language which is used in film analysis;
To introduce the students to some of the fundamental cinematic techniques and styles deployed by filmmakers;
To introduce students to a series of historical and theoretical issues related to the analysis of cinema.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Critically appraise a film through an appreciation of some of the most important cinematic techniques and styles;
Discuss cinema as an art form in its own right;
Have an in-depth knowledge of the tools and techniques of film language which create meaning.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Enhance their skills in visual analysis via an understanding of the key concepts and the terminology of film studies;
Develop the skills which are necessary for the analysis of the construction of images;
Transfer the ability of analysing the cultural and ideological ramifications of images in film to the analysis of images in other art forms;
Critically appraise contemporary culture via visual analysis.
