DESCRIPTION This study-unit will serve as an introduction to the history of Italian television from the inception of television broadcasts of RAI (1954) to the present age. The evolution of this medium will be placed within a precise historical framework with an eye to some of the most significant socio-economic changes which Italy underwent. Particular attention will be paid to the evolution of some of the most important television broadcasts, from the ‘telegiornale’ to the rise of quizzes, from the televisual adaptation of literary texts to the recent phenomenon of reality shows. The rise of national commercial channels will also be examined.

Study-unit Aims:

• To provide an overview of the key moments in the history of Italian television.
• To introduce students to the basic television language which is used in the analysis of TV series.
• To introduce the students to some of the fundamental classics of Italian literature through the perspective of the most important television film-makers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will:

• Be able to critically appraise a TV series through the application of the most important television techniques and styles;
• Be able to discuss TV as an art form in its own right;
• Have an in-depth knowledge of the tools and techniques of TV language which create meaning.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Enhance their skills in visual analysis via an understanding of the key concepts and the terminology of TV studies;
• Develop the skills which are necessary for the analysis of the construction of images and also literary texts;
• Transfer the ability of analysing the cultural and ideological ramifications of images in TV drama to the analysis of other art forms.

A coursepack of critical readings will be made available at the beginning of the study-unit.
