TITLE Studi anglo-italiani: il Novecento

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Italian

DESCRIPTION This unit will combine critical readings of key texts with a theoretical perspective in the exploration of Anglo-Italian Studies. In the first part of the unit, the students will be introduced to a series of theoretical approaches in the debate surrounding comparative literature with a particular focus on myth and mythology, canon formation, thematology, genre theory and metatextuality. In the second part of the unit, we will conduct close readings of modernist prose texts with an eye to the interaction between Italian and Anglo-American literature. The readings may include works by James Joyce, Italo Svevo and Virginia Woolf, among others. We will then proceed to translation studies and will discuss the debate on originality versus imitation by concentrating on a series of poems which have been translated from English to Italian or, conversely, from Italian to English. Finally, attention will be given to "imagology," or the the cultural construction of the Other. In this section, notions of alterity and identity, of sameness and difference will be examined through the visual analysis of the representation of Italy in British or American films, such as "Don't Look Now" or "A Room with a View," and "Where Angels Fear to Tread." The perception of America by Italian immigrants as portrayed in such films as "Golden Door" will also be examined.
