| DESCRIPTION | Title: Anglo-Italian Studies: The Twentieth Century between Literature and Film This unit will combine critical readings of key texts in literature and film in the exploration of Anglo-Italian Studies. In the first part of the unit, the students will be introduced to a series of theoretical approaches in the debate surrounding comparative literature with a particular focus on myth and mythology, canon formation, thematology, genre theory and metatextuality. In the second part of the unit, we will conduct close readings of modernist prose texts with an eye to the interaction between Italian and Anglo-American literature. The readings may include works by Virginia Woolf Luigi Pirandello, and E.M. Forster, among others. Finally, notions of alterity and identity, of sameness and difference will be examined through the analysis of the representation of Italy in cinematic transpositions of literary texts such as "Don't Look Now" or "A Room with a View," and "Where Angels Fear to Tread." The perception of America by Italian immigrants as portrayed in such films as "Golden Door" and “The Godfather” will also be examined. Other films on imagology, or the cultural construction of the Other. will include “Viaggio in Italia”, “Lamerica” and “La leggenda del pianista sull’oceano.” Study-unit Aims: - To invite students to perceive literature and cinema as disciplines capable of transcending linguistic and national boundaries; - To allow students to appreciate the complexities and interactions of cultures in Anglo-Italian Studies; - To invite students to adopt a theoretical and critical approach when conducting close readings of literary and filmic texts; - To give students the opportunity to read literary texts and view filmic ones in more than one language.
