DESCRIPTION This Study-unit is dedicated to one of the most important genres of the Italian literary tradition: lyrical poetry. In the first part of the Study-unit we will reflect on the starting point of modern Italian poetry, with particular reference to the studies of Pier Vincenzo Mengaldo, Giacomo Debenedetti and Guido Mazzoni; at the same time, we will consider the Italian cultural context during the turn of the 20th century.

The second part of the Study-unit will be more analytical: the works of a series of Italian poets will be read and discussed in class: students will then follow the development of modern and contemporary Italian poetry. We will reflect on the works of Montale and Ungaretti, the initiators of the Italian modernist tradition in poetry. Collections of Sereni, Pagliarani, Fortini, Bertolucci, Caproni, Zanzotto, and Luzi will be considered as well. The final part of the Study-unit will be dedicated to contemporary Italian poetry, with a particular attention to the works of De Angelis, Buffoni, Valduga, Cavalli and Magrelli.

Study-unit Aims:

The objective of this Study-unit is to reflect on the evolution of the genre of lyrical poetry in the Italian literary canon.
The objective of this Study-unit is to familiarize students with the main critical theories regarding modern and contemporary Italian poetry.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discern the inpact of the Italian poetry on society, culture and history;
- Perceive the influence of the European literature on the Italian literary canon;
- Know of the main differences between a series of historical literary movements such as Romanticism, Modernism and Postmodernism.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the main characteristics of modern and contemporary poetry and, at the same time, highlight the main differences with the other genres of the Italian literary tradition i.e. novel, drama, theatre, and epic;
- Discuss the relevance of lyrical poetry in the Italian and European literary canon;
- Use the technical tools useful to read and interpret a poetical text.
