DESCRIPTION This study-unit will examine the narrative techniques and the major strategies of representation deployed in Italian cinema from the eighties to the present day. In this study-unit, students will be introduced to, or refamiliarised with, a wide-ranging series of film strategies via the close analysis of a number of exemplary film sequences which may be drawn from the works of such directors as Roberto Benigni, Gianni Amelio, Enzo Monteleone, Giuseppe Tornatore, Gabriele Salvatores, Matteo Garrone, Luca Guadagnino, Paolo Genovese, Ferzan Ozpetek, as well as Antonio Piazza and Fabio Grassadonia, among others . Special reference will also be made to the 'televisual' with an eye to the rise of Italian television series which may include 'Gomorra' and ‘My Brilliant Friend'. The close study of specific sequences will enable students to enhance their appreciation of key elements of film form and to refine their previously acquired basic vocabulary and concepts of film studies. As in the case of ITL1019: Cinema italiano: Dal neorealismo agli anni Settanta, the indebtedness of Italian cinema to other art forms, in particular literature, painting, and music will be explored as we make our way through Italy’s cinematic landscape.

Study-Unit Aims:
