CODE ITL3101

TITLE Letteratura italiana: il primo Ottocento

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Italian

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will focus initially on the Neoclassical and Romantic movements, considered within the framework of the legacy of European Illuministic thought. It will then analyse the basic tenets of Romanticism, with particular reference to the Italian cultural context. The 19th transition to modernity will be highlighted from different perspectives, markedly literary, cultural and social. Against this conceptual backdrop, the study-unit will move on to a critical reading of three of the most representative Italian works: Foscolo, "I sepolcri"; Manzoni, "I promessi sposi"; Leopardi, "Canti". Students will also be expected to read other texts recommended during the study-unit.
