TITLE Exploring Malta’s Mediascape

UM LEVEL I - Introductory Level

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences

DESCRIPTION Although Malta is the smallest member state of the EU, its media landscape is one of the most varied and ‘populated’ within the EU. The number of media organisations – particularly broadcasting organisations - is very large and their ownership structures most varied. It is also unique at least in one respect. It is the only EU country where political parties own radio and TV stations besides newspapers and news websites. The penetration of the Internet is very high as is the number of subscriptions in Facebook. Newspaper readership is very low but the number of papers published is anything but small.

This Unit studies the societal and psycho-cultural features which gave rise to this particular media ecology, analyses the current situation and tries to explore future directions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Know the psycho-cultural and sociological theories used in the analysis of the Maltese mediascape;
- Identify the method of analysing a mediascape using both academic streams at the same time;
- List the main characteristics of the Maltese mediascape and the factors that influence it.

2. Skills:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Deepen their analytical skills of the Maltese mediascape;
- Apply academic theories to better understand concrete media situations in Maltese society.
