| DESCRIPTION | The Unit will afford a critical review of current research into literacy development, a theoretical framework for understanding the nature of dyslexia, and issues of screening and strategies for support. In addition it is designed for anyone who is interested in gaining knowledge and learning about teaching strategies to help and support students with dyscalculia (difficulty understanding basic number concepts and numeracy skills necessary to understand and apply mathematics). It is anticipated that this Unit will be highly relevant to teachers, support teachers and parents alike. The Unit aims at dealing with the following questions: - What is dyslexia? - What is dyscalculia? - What are the key indicators of dyslexia? - What are the key indicators of dyscalculia? - What does research say? - What do professional reports actually say? - How can one support a child who has dyslexia or dyscalculia? - How do I increase self-esteem in my learner? To answer the above questions the following topics will be included in the Unit: - Defining dyslexia - Defining dyscalculia - Current research on dyslexia and dyscalculia - Assessment and screening issues - Identifying needs - The role of parents and teachers - Supporting literacy and numeracy learning and teaching Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the Unit the student will: - Have a thorough understanding about current research related to the dyslexic learner. - Be able to identify warning signs that a child might have dyslexia. - Be able to identify warning signs that a child might have dyscalculia. - Have knowledge of what practices are used for supporting the learner. - Be able to gain the ability to interpret reports written by educational professionals. 2. Skills: By the end of the Unit the student will be able to: - Offer teachers and support teachers strategies and tools to support the dyslexic learner at school. - Offer teachers and support teachers strategies and tools to support the children with numeracy difficulties at school. - Offer parents strategies and tools to support their child at home.
