DESCRIPTION All individuals face challenges associated with adjustment, the efforts people make to meet the demands of everyday life. Based on the principles of Positive Psychology, this Unit examines the adjustment process in normal individuals through a combination of lectures, discussion and small group interaction. The Unit will apply psychological principles to help participants to meet the challenges they face in daily life, to resolve problems and to reach their potential. Theoretical perspectives are presented and discussed, but the primary focus of the Unit is on the application of theory and research to the everyday context with special reference to the workplace environment. The Unit will examine the following core issues in adjustment:

The nature of human adjustment and resilience; Human transitions and transition negotiation; Adjustment and the lifecycle; Stress and Coping; Self issues; Social thinking and adjustment; Personality and individual differences; Emotional intelligence; Subjective well-being.

Specific applications of the above will be made will be made to Careers and Work.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able, through a written exposition of the negotiation of a personal transition on the work place, to:
- Explain how life is full of challenges and how these provide an opportunity to grow;
- Develop insight into how different psychologists conceptualize adjustment;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and research in psychology relevant to the problems of adjustment in today’s complex world with specific reference to the workplace;
- Describe how both the self and social factors influence adjustment in a variety of contexts but most notably in the work environment;
- Describe the challenges of the life cycle.

2. Skills:

By the end of the Unit the student will be able to:
- Communicate in writing the adjustment issues identified with a particular personal workplace transition;
- Apply psychological principles to meet the challenges they face in everyday life and on the workplace;
- Reflect and negotiate personal transitions and to reach their unique potential;
- Acknowledge the importance of human diversity in everyday life and at the workplace.
