Study-Unit Description

CODE LHG5004

TITLE Die vier Fertigkeiten und ihre Bewertung / The Four Language Skills and their Assessment

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Languages and Humanities Education

DESCRIPTION The study-unit starts by focusing on the Common European framework of languages and its suggestions for teaching Foreign Languages around Europe.

Seen in this light, the study-unit will discuss in detail the four language skills (i.e. listening, speaking, writing and reading) and the way they are taught within the possible diverse German as a Foreign Language (GFL) learning contexts.

An integral part of the discussion will also include the analysis of specific methods of assessment one can possibly use for each of the four language skills.

Throughout the study-unit, since the very early stages students are expected to implement through practical activities the theories discussed.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aims of this particular study-unit are:
- To make students aware that GFL entails different skills one should address in class;
- To analyse these four learning skills first individually and then as a whole i.e. linked together;
- To make students aware that different methods of assessment usually accompany the particular four language skills.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the main differences and the linking similarities between the four language skills and their teaching;
- Critically evaluate the particular assessment technique(s) adopted when evaluating the GFL students’ four language skills.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use the required strategies and approaches needed when teaching the particular language skill;
- Realize that different learning skills at times require different assessment strategies;
- While seeing the four language skills as individual entities, still observe common links among the four.
