CODE LHI5004

TITLE La valutazione e la verifica / Assessment and Correction

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Languages and Humanities Education

DESCRIPTION The study-unit shall be divided in 2 parts: the theoretical part and the practical part. In the first part of the unit, the participants will be given a sound theoretical basis of the basic notions of evaluation and assessment, namely summative and formative assessment as well as assessment for learning and continuous assessment.

Future teachers of languages need to understand how assessment for learning uses continuous assessment methods to gauge a student's progress over a period of time in various language learning contexts. This can only be achieved through collection of evidence of specific skills and other items at one particular time and language performance and progress over time in all four abilities (listening, speaking, reading and writing,) or in all three communication modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational). The use of a combination of testing instruments lends validity and reliability to the assessment process. The second part of the study unit will consist of practical sessions in which the participants will be asked to prepare test papers for the different language skills and their respective assessment criteria. They will also be asked to use different assessment tools and tasks to assess different language skills. Reference will also be made to the Subject Proficiency Assessment programme & procedures. The underlying characteristics and the criteria necessary for a valid test will also be discussed in detail. Another important aspect that will be analysed is the difference between proficiency tests and achievement tests, where the former are intended to measure a learner’s command of a language irrespective of his/her background in that language and therefore do not depend on particular class content or course materials. Samples of students’ work will be presented to the students as well as copies of school tests and SEC (Italian) exams. The writing of the assessment criteria for each of the four language skills will also be tackled. The final part of the study-unit will be dedicated to an analysis of the certification system currently being used in Italy, namely the PLIDA and the CILS examinations.

Study-Unit Aims:

The main aim of this unit is to analyse in detail the differences between various assessment tools available for teachers of languages. The study-unit also aims to introduce the participants to important practice and research in the use of assessment criteria for the productive skills (speaking and writing) and the receptive skills (reading and listening). The participants will be given the specific knowledge and skills necessary in two domains, mainly expertise in the assessment of languages and familiarization with the practices of that domain.

Another aim of the unit is to explore how assessment for learning is incorporated fully into instruction with the result that every learning experience, activity and student’s action is considered as evidence and therefore gives the opportunity to both teacher and learner to act upon it.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- analyse the difference between formative and summative assessment within the context of a class situation.
- analyse the difference between assessment for learning and continuous assessment in a classroom situation.
- analyse better how assessment for learning uses continuous assessment methods to gauge a student's progress over a period of time in various language learning contexts.
- identify the characteristics of the various forms of assessment that can be used in a class situation.
- recognize and internalize the content of that domain.
- demonstrate knowledge of different assessment approaches and strategies.
- formulate a sound theoretical basis of the basic assessment procedures that can be used to measure language proficiency.
- define the relationship between theory and practice in assessment of foreign languages.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- develop adequate assessment tools for the receptive skills.
- develop adequate assessment tools for the productive skills.
- explore and evaluate ways in which adequate assessment tools can be used for didactic purposes.
- formulate tasks, exercises and exam papers to measure student achievement in the various language skills.
- decide what to assess, how to assess it and what assessment tools must be used to measure student proficiency in the language.
- demonstrate and evaluate, within the context of a class situation, the use of appropriate assessment tools for the purpose of validation and verification of language skills.
- produce assessment criteria for each of the four basic language skills.
