Study-Unit Description

CODE LHL5003

TITLE Critical Media Literacy Education

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Technology and Entrepreneurship Education

DESCRIPTION In the first two study-units, students were exposed to the different learning strategies and pedagogies in media literacy education. Since these study-units served as a preliminary grounding to theories and practices, students were expected to be critical at an introductory level.

This study-unit arms students with more advanced critical methods in designing and developing their own learning intervention. In this study-unit, students will be challenged to look into key learning theories in greater depth and critically explore how such theories can be effective in the design of their own learning interventions.

By the end of this study-unit, student are expected to report and present findings that relate to their newly developed learning intervention.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to ask students to:
- first identify a particular and specific learning context;
- critically evaluate learning theories used in Module 1 and Module 2;
- carefully choose appropriate theories for the particular selected learning context;
- design and develop a learning intervention supported by the chosen theories;
- report and evaluate the outcomes and impacts of the learning intervention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- evaluate different levels of critical skills and move from initial critical levels to advanced (i.e. deeper) criticality;
- apply critical skills effectively to research current vocational educational contexts and design appropriate learning interventions;
- interpret the outcomes of their own criticality and its application in the design and development of a learning intervention;
- explore possible future potentials in results and findings of the outcomes.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- apply appropriate practical skills to design various pedagogical resources that one can use in media literacy vocational education;
- comment critically about their own work and about the resources produced by peers;
- learn how to assess media literacy student work formatively;
- reflect constructively about critical comments received by peers and other general audiences.
