DESCRIPTION This study-unit will examine the various modes of assessment as an essential factor towards effective teaching and learning. This will be done in the light of the theoretical background of the current Social Studies trends. During this unit students will examine the purposes of assessment, the criteria for assessment, the various assessment instruments used and the degree of accountability rendered.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study unit aims to assist students:
- To become knowledgeable in the types of assessments according to the students’ levels, and curriculum needs.
- To become knowledgeable in the different ways, exercises, methods of assessments targeted to assess different aspects of the curriculum.
- To explore ways how traditional types of assessments (pen and paper) can be aimed to meet the students’ different abilities while preparing them to reach the required level by the end of the year.
- To become accustomed with the new online types of assessment which are available and how these can improve the quality of assessments.
- To reflect on the different components of an exam paper, how to compile it, what to keep in mind and other important skills to provide a fair exam paper.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the various forms and styles of assessment as related to the Social Studies curriculum and show the ability to associate them to practice.
- Demonstrate knowledge of issues related to assessment and strategies supporting educational improvement.
- Explain the various areas included in the graded assessments used in Social Studies by being able to define them, comment on them and relate them to other areas of study.
- Analyse aspects of curriculum present in student’s everyday life or specific texts and illustrating how these examples can serve the purpose of addressing the different components of the Social Studies curriculum.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate that the possession of Pedagogical Content Knowledge related to Social Studies teaching and learning by providing exam papers, worksheets and marking criteria for Social Studies.
- Apply and compare developmental sequences of different Social Studies topics by displaying how different kinds of assessments are used to assess different themes.
- Develop adequate graded teaching materials aimed for learners with different needs.
