DESCRIPTION This study-unit will be concentrating on the teaching role of the Social Studies teacher in the Digital Age. Students will evaluate social studies material already available on the Internet, discuss the negative effect of multi-media and social networking on young minds with a view of reconciling the excessive use with effective and positive exposition of multi-media in the classroom environment.

This unit will examine the various ways in which the student teacher can help students be more involved in the globalized community. This unit will help student teachers to involve pressure groups, NGOs and other groups in www that can be used in the classroom the community. The course also introduces the basic theory for the infusion of technology, especially eLearning and the use of ICTs as an essential component for the instruction of Social Studies.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to assist students to:
- Become conversant with the importance of technology in this digital age, leading to interactive lessons where are student centred.
- Become knowledgeable of how to encourage students to take control of their own learning process in a democratic atmosphere and in relation to the Social Studies syllabus.
- Explore the importance of involvement with international NGOs and other pressure groups to provide a more concrete aspect of Social Studies.
- Reflect on the importance of groups, civic competences and other aspects in society as an integral part in Social Studies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate how to deliver lessons in Social Studies using various digital age resources.
- Identify and explain the importance of national and international NGOs and VO that work within society and how these can be assimilated to deliver better social studies lessons.
- Explain the various ways that involvement of NGO's and VO in the classroom are beneficial to enhance lesson delivery.
- Develop and analyse the language and messages delivered, while delivering lessons using various digital technologies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate the possession of pedagogical content knowledge related to digital activities for school children.
- Explain the various links between "digital society" and the social studies curriculum.
- Develop competence in compiling resources and other teaching materials to use in order to promote civic competencies and more effective digital technology usage.
