TITLE La evaluación en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de ELE / Assessment in the Teaching and Learning of SFL

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Languages and Humanities Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is meant to familiarise students with vital issues in language testing and assessment. As a result, during the first part of this unit we shall be looking at classroom-based assessment, targeting a formative mode of evaluation that is carried out on a day-to-day basis in order to be able to monitor students’ learning and progress continuously. We will also emphasise the need for innovative and alternative ways of assessment practices that address diverse students’ learning patterns and needs, as well as the evaluation of the different language competencies.

On the other hand, during the second part of the study-unit, we will focus on the skills needed for the formal setting up of test and examination tasks, while critically investigating the current testing in Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL) and other modern languages in the local scenario. Reference will also be made to DELE (Diploma en Español Lengua Extranjera, Instituto Cervantes) examinations.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To familiarise students with inclusive methods of assessment and assessment tools used in the teaching and learning process of SFL and to help them establish a link between the latter and the guidelines for assessment set in the NCF document.
- To explore how particular assessment strategies can help inform the learning process of learners and contribute towards his/her overall communicative competence.
- To assist students in the preparation, production and marking of tests and examinations according to established criteria for the setting up of examination tasks from Year 7 to Year 11.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the role of assessment in the teaching and learning process of SFL by highlighting the advantages of formative assessment over more traditional summative means of assessment.
- critically assess current practices in assessment by making reference to specialised literature in the field to support his/her arguments.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- devise an array of formative evaluation tools to assist him/her in the assessment of learners' continuous development and learning process in a given situation.
- set a formal examination task intended for a particular level within secondary compulsory schooling.
