DESCRIPTION In this study-unit special attention will be given to vocabulary and its teaching and learning in the SFL classroom. The first part, more theoretical and descriptive in nature, will study the complexity of lexical knowledge, its acquisition and retention in SFL, as well as the ensuing pedagogical implications for the SFL classroom.

In the second part, becoming-teachers of Spanish will analyse and evaluate pedagogical tools, such as the local syllabi, textbooks and other available teaching resources to identify lexical units therein and select the target vocabulary to teach in specific situations. Becoming-teachers of Spanish will also design teaching and learning activities to present, practice and use the identified vocabulary.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To help students understand the complexity of lexical knowledge, its acquisition and retention in SFL.
- To help students reflect on the pedagogical implications of said complexity for the SFL classroom.
- To introduce students to the lexical aspects covered in local SFL syllabi.
- To help students choose which vocabulary to teach in specific situations.
- To assist students in the preparation of teaching and learning activities that present, practice and use the vocabulary at hand.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify, know and understand the linguistic, communicative and cultural aspects relevant to the teaching, learning and retention of the lexicon in SFL.
- outline the implications for teaching and learning of vocabulary in SFL by making specific reference to the current literature in the field.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- choose which vocabulary to teach in a specific situation.
- design inclusive activities and tasks aimed at developing learners' lexical competence.
