DESCRIPTION This study-unit will examine the various modes of assessment as an essential factor towards effective teaching and learning. This will be done in the light of the theoretical background of the current European Studies trends. The purpose of assessment, the criteria used, the various assessment tools and the degree of accountability rendered will be identified during this study-unit.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim is to:

- Evaluate the different types of assessment which can be used in the teaching of European Studies;
- Make prospective teachers aware of the importance of both traditional and contemporary modes of assessment;
- Guide students in the preparation of exam papers, answer sheets and rubrics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- List the various forms and styles of assessment;
- Recognise the rationale behind each type of assessment;
- Define assessment in the European Studies curriculum;
- Comprehend how to use the marks to help students improve themselves both academically and personally.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Create examination papers, worksheets and marking criteria for European Studies;
- Demonstrate awareness that different types of assessments can be used to assess different topics;
- Use the results from assessments to help students focus on their studies.
