DESCRIPTION The study-unit is intended to provide a detailed theoretical overview of memory institutions in terms of their historical development, present formats and structures. It introduces the students to best practices for the information professional, while giving a background to the developments occurring within the information profession. It also explains the methods employed and best practices in undertaking research, writing and presenting of tertiary-level course work. Furthermore it provides exposure to a variety of different types of memory institutions in Malta, or dealing with Maltese material, this through guided practical field trips to a number of relevant institutions.

Study-Unit Aims:

a) To introduce the basic tenets and best practices of the information profession;
b) To introduce students to the different types of memory institutions through first-hand encounters in order to observe the day-to-day running, issues, challenges and ways forward of such institutions;
c) To expose students to best practices where research and its presentation at undergraduate level is concerned.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Map the historical development of memory institutions;
- Distinguish between different repositories of published and unpublished knowledge;
- Distinguish historical collections as against ones utilized for current needs;
- Define the contemporary opportunities/challenges faced by memory institutions;
- Discuss the future roles and professional positions within a digital memory environment.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) Distinguish between the different types of information-providing institutions and acquire the ability to perform basic tasks in a number of them;
b) Conduct tertiary-level academic work at undergraduate level and presenting it as required by the canons of academic standards.
