DESCRIPTION This study-unit is intended to provide students with a basic understanding of the main archival and manuscript collections related to Malta, existing both in Malta and abroad.

It will cover the following areas:
1. Variety and characteristics of archival collections in Malta: State and private collections.
2. Maltese archival collections outside Malta: coverage and characteristics.
3. Issues of accessibility of traditional paper-based Maltese archival collections.
4. Issues of preservation of Maltese paper-based archives.
5. Linguistic and stylistic characteristics of Maltese archival holdings.
6. The emerging electronic archives related to Malta.
7. Issues relating to preservation, and accessibility of Maltese electronic archives.
8. Digitising projects: advantages and challenges in the Maltese archival context.
9. Research potential of Maltese archives: research topics covered and others still awaiting coverage.

Study-unit Aims:

- To make students aware of the main archival and manuscript collections to Malta from different periods.
- To expose students to the various research possibilities that such collections offer.
- To make students aware of the challenges still facing such collections, when it comes to issues of:
    - Accessibility,
    - Preservation
    - Awareness of Researchers

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate Knowledge of the different archives and manuscript collections related to Malta.
- Gain knowledge of the different research tools available for such collections and their respective effectiveness and suitability.
- Describe the fundamental roles that manuscript and archival written heritage plays in the formation of national memory and identity.
- Synthesize similarities and differences in content and research potential of the different archival holdings pertaining to Malta and existing both locally and abroad.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to describe and evaluate the situation in a given archive/s, highlighting what can be considered as being strong and weak aspects and suggesting ways in which such challenges may be addressed.
