| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to familiarize students with the main archival and manuscript collections in Malta or those related to Malta abroad. It will cover the following areas: 1. Variety and characteristics of archival collections in Malta: State and private collections; 2. Maltese archival collections outside Malta: coverage and characteristics; 3. Issues of accessibility of traditional paper-based Maltese archival collections; 4. Issues of preservation of Maltese paper-based archives; 5. Linguistic and stylistic characteristics of Maltese archival holdings. Study-unit Aims: - To make students aware of the main archival and manuscript collections to Malta from different periods; - To expose students to the various research possibilities that such collections offer; - To make students aware of the challenges still facing such collections. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Demonstrate Knowledge of the different archives and manuscript collections related to Malta; - Gain knowledge of the different research tools available for such collections and their respective effectiveness and suitability. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe and evaluate the situation in a given archive/s; - Explain the different nature of manuscripts from archives; - Highlighting what can be considered as being strong and weak aspects. Supplementary Texts Various print and online papers will be indicated to students along the course. |
