| DESCRIPTION | This unit introduces students to the concept of public memory and its growing importance in national, regional and private archives. Gradually the concept of public memory is taking ground in all memory institutions. The changes in technology has facilitated the process, yet created the urgency for records managers and archivists to train themselves not only in the traditional archiving techniques but also for the challenges of mixed media and non-traditional data carriers. Thus the unit also introduces the basic concepts of digital curation as applied in memory projects. Study-Unit Aims: This unit aims to help participants to familiarise themselves with basic concepts in public memory as applied to archival environments. It further focuses on how such concepts depend on digital curation in terms of capture, preservation and dissemination. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - explain the role of public memory in archival environments; - describe the value of oral tradition for archival institutions; - demonstrate the dependency of public memory projects on effective digital curation processes; - explain the basic principles of applied digital curation; - demonstrate the benefits to the research community of providing public memory projects backed by professional digital curation. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply digital curation principles in public memory projects; - devise strategies for the archiving of oral memory initiatives; - advise on negotiating procedures between diverse stakeholders in such projects.
