DESCRIPTION During the first part of the study-unit, an introduction to the theoretical, historical and cultural background of KM will be explored. Students will be able to discuss and understand the difference between information and knowledge and how this is an essential concept in the development of KM.

The second part of the unit will introduce students to the fundamental principles of KM and what is the role the various types of libraries can take up in their various and diverse scenarios.

The final part of the unit will focus on implementation of KM projects in organisations and what are the main issues that need to be taken into consideration to maximise the possibility of success in such a project.

Study-unit Aims:

By the end of this study-unit, students should be in a position to understand what is KM, how it links with LIS, and how they can play a critical role in the implementation of any KM strategy within their organisations, be they public or private.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the diversity of disciplines and content that constitute the field of knowledge management and how these can be linked to traditional library and information studies;
- Explain the nature of organisational culture, organisational change and the role of leadership in change processes;
- Describe the development of the concept of intellectual capital and why this is important for the organisation;
- Propose KM projects and utilise existing tools to add value to their organisations via KM projects.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply a range of transferable skills including literature search, analytical skills, application of theory to real-life situations, teamwork, motivation and interpersonal skills;
- Apply traditional library and information skills to KM projects within their organisations.
