DESCRIPTION This study-unit will define and examine the nature of the 'Maltese book' in its various forms, its significance and dissemination across time. This constitutes a fundamental aspect in the study of the printed output in any national context, including Malta.

- Defining what constitutes the 'Maltese book' authorship, subject, publishing location and language aspects.
- Local printing activity and book production: 1642 to 1839.
- Local printing activity and book production: 1839 to date.
- The publication of Malta-related books outside Malta: reasons, variety of production, local dissemination and relevance.
- Coverage of non-fiction themes.
- Reference works.
- Malta-related prose in various languages.
- The rise and current state of Maltese prose.
- Maltese poetry.
- Bibliographic control and tools: present situation and ways ahead.
- The visual element in Maltese books.
- Collections of Melitensia in Malta and abroad: accessibility.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Explore the diversity of the Maltese books and its historical development.
- Discuss the various subjects and areas covered by Melitensia in book format.
- Delve into issues of production, design and their effect upon the audience.
- Study issues relating to its tracing, survival and bibliographic recording.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe clearly the complexities of the Maltese book in terms of subject-matter, language and targeted audience across time. This will be carried out through case-studies assigned to the students.
- Define and clearly distinguish the different roles of the Maltese book in the Maltese social, political, and religious contexts across time.
- Identify and examine the present challenges related to the bibliographic control and description of the Maltese book, in both print and electronic formats.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Select a type of Maltese book and analyse it in terms of its characteristics, use and effect on its audience.
- Recognise specific characteristics of the Maltese book produced locally and abroad.
- Gain the ability to devise strategies for its conservation and bibliographic record.
