DESCRIPTION Effective, efficient, anticipatory, and responsive management is vital for the successful functioning of any institutional setting, including libraries and information centres. This study-until introduces the theoretical foundations and practical considerations of library and information management. Covering the basics of management functions of libraries and information centres, students will begin to synthesize and apply management principles to address topics related to diverse collections, services, intellectual property, technology, data, communications, and users.

Topics covered can include:
• Management principles
• Management policies and plans
• Management ethics
• Leadership and collaboration approaches
• Human resources and staffing
• User services
• Information services
• Collection development
• Facilities management
• Disaster planning and management
• Communications and marketing
• Current and emerging management trends.

Study-unit Aims:

- This study-unit will establish the theoretical and practical foundations of managing and leading libraries and related information centres by providing foundational knowledge of management needs, issues, insights, and trends;
- This study-unit will further help students gain awareness of how to plan for management responsibilities and expectations;
- By overviewing the major principles and main practices of the management of libraries and related information centres, this study-unit will provide a basis upon which to pursue management responsibilities and leadership opportunities in information professions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define, describe, and determine major management principles;
- distinguish between management policies and procedures, strategies and tactics, and missions and actions;
- examine the main best practices for the management of libraries and information centres;
- develop policies for the management of libraries and information centres;
- identify current and emerging trends in the management of libraries and information centres;
- identify and apply the major ethics and values of management.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify between strategic directions and tactical implementations of projects and services;
- develop informed policies and plans for libraries and information centres;
- apply and analyze professional ethics and values of the library and information field to management activities;
- anticipate, address, and respond to user needs, expectations, and issues;
- ability to manage human resources, staffing, financial planning, collection development, technology, and user services;
- build connections and relationships between different internal and external stakeholders to help advance the mission of a library or information centre;
- ability to advocate for, communicate about, and market the need for and importance of libraries and information centres;
- identify challenges, opportunities, and trends in and for management in libraries and information centres.
