DESCRIPTION Publishing and literacy share the broad aim of making information available and understandable. Publishing produces diverse kinds, forms, and formats of information for heterogeneous purposes. Literacy provides the skills necessary to interpret, understand, and apply that information. Covering the intersections and relationships between publishing and literacy, this study-unit introduces students to the publishing industry and literacy competencies. Concentrating on both local and international components of publishing and literacy efforts and entities, this study-unit will involve and collaborate with both local publishing companies and organizations, the National Literacy Agency, and the National Library. It will include experts from these entities to serve as either co-lecturers and/or guest lecturers in order to contribute and leverage their expert knowledge, insights, and experiences to the study-unit content and class discussions.

Topics covered can include:
• Book publishing
• Journal publishing
• Scholarly publishing and communications
• Digital publishing
• Authorship
• E-books and print books
• Open Access
• Literacy approaches and frameworks
• Metaliteracy models
• Book (information) hunger
• National and international literacy initiatives, challenges, and opportunities
• Current and emerging trends in publishing and literacy.

Study-unit Aims:

- Introduce students to the major components, characteristics, and contexts of both publishing and literacy;
- Familiarize students to experts practicing in the fields of publishing and literacy;
- Explore the intersections and relationships between publishing and literacy;
- Provide a solid foundation for approaching, collaborating with, and contributing to local and international publishing and literacy efforts, entities, and initiatives.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify, explain, and apply the major kinds and components of literacy;
- analyze and assess scholarly and professional approaches to and practices of both publishing and literacy;
- connect, synthesize, and illustrate the intersections between publishing and literacy;
- interpret and predict current and emerging trends within publishing;
- interpret and predict current and emerging trends within literacy.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- analyze trends in the communication of information, specifically through diverse publishing activities, practices, and industries;
- define and explain different publishing models and literacy frameworks;
- ability to apply knowledge of publishing and literacy to various publishing, literacy, and cognate contexts;
- connect and build relationships between publishing and literacy efforts, entities, and initiatives;
- identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of diverse kinds of publishing, as well as the products and services of publishing (such as e-books, print books, streaming services, libraries, repositories, databases, etc.);
- analyze, compare, apply, assess, and evaluate different literacy approaches, frameworks, and models for diverse contexts;
- identify current and emerging trends in publishing and literacy.
