DESCRIPTION | The aim of this study-unit is to introduce students who understand the fundamental concepts of Linguistics to the notion of formal model of grammar and to familiarise them with various models of syntax (phrase/sentence structure) and morphology (word structure). Content Covered: The notion of a model is explored both from a historical and from a “present-day” perspective, with a focus on the latter. The former looks at the way in which the notion of grammar has been treated in different historical phases and by different scholars and schools of thought; the latter looks both at current models of grammar, both generative and non-generative.
