CODE LIS3110

TITLE Advanced Cataloguing and Bibliographic Control

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Library Information and Archive Sciences

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a continuation of the previous years' Cataloguing & Biblio. Mgt I, and is divided into two parts. The first part kicks of from bibliographic description of monographs and opens up to other items that might be found in a given collection, i.e. periodicals, cartographic materials, audio-visual media, etc.

The second part of this unit focuses on Machine Readable Cataloguing version 21 (MARC21). This system uses the ISBD format taught by AACR2 but gives a different layout to the cataloguing record. This layout is widely used nowadays on modern Online Public Access Catalogues in various institutions worldwide.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit is to:

- Delve deeper into the intricacies of ISBD cataloguing;
- Learn to shift the rules taught in the previous year to other media using both the AACR2 and the students' own capicities;
- Face new formats like MARC21 instead of ISBD using the same rules taught during the cataloguing exercises.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Know the differences in terms of bibliographic description between a monograph and other media found in a collection;
- Continue to discover the rest of the chapters of the AACR2 code which were left unvisited in the previous year;
- Understand that the AACR2 rules are far from obsolete, they are still being used by machine catalogues.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- To catalogue as many as different media found in a library as possible;
- To discern OPAC fields that do not use ISBD formats.
